What's it like to fish with Farout? - a Client's Perspective

We recently had the pleasure of the company of John Beachcomber on a trip for shark and tiger. Little did we know that, as well as being one of the nicest guys you could hope to meet, John is a fairly prolific writer for the British angling community, both online and in print. He has been putting his experiences down for posterity, initially the shark leg of his trip, which can be read here: John's Shark Tales. We understand that John is working on a piece covering the second leg of his trip (freshwater), so watch this space for details. Deals are also afoot for full articles for a couple of British magazines - we'll let you know when we know which issues they'll be in, and thanks to John for the effort (and we look forward to seeing him later in the year for the barbel run!)

December 2006

FOF trip to River Okavango with 60th Birthday present clients (paid by their wives!) Colin Hardie, Dave Crosswaithe and John Haines. Using Mepps spinners in the slack water lilly pad Hippo lagoons, in one day over 50 Three Spot Bream averaging 4 pounds and biggest 6 pounds were caught, similiar to the British Perch. And with three clients, three casts and three fish were landed (as seen on our promo dvd) a first for FOF. Then to make this trip even more special we found a Barbel Run and each client caught 30 Tigerfish a day averaging 5 pounds biggest 8lbs over a period of 3 days using bright coloured Rapala shallow running lures and copper coloured metal spoons similiar to the ones you use for British Pike.

May 2007

FOF trip to the Upper Zambezi River in Namibia with Adam Clark and Johnny Whitfield. Just wait and see the DVD! It was so incredible we have nearly finished making a 60min DVD just on this trip alone. A new location for FOF, and with over 200 Tigerfish in 5 days and 2 new PB's Adam and Johnny have set a new FOF Record. In fact the Lodge that we use near Katimo Mulio has been in operation for 6 years and told us that we have also set a new Lodge record for numbers of fish and biggest fish so far in 2007 (13 pounds).

From January to March every year since time began, the Zambezi floods and millions of fish lay eggs in the plains; these eggs grow into 2 inch fingerlings that when the river starts to drop in April/May (by up to half a foot a day!) are forced back into the main river off the flood plains. Waiting for these fry are thousands of birds of all shapes and sizes, huge crocodiles and catfish and yes you guessed it - thousands and thousands of hungry tigerfish averaging an incredible 6lbs all the way up to what is now the lodge record of 16lbs!

On our trip we drifted in a boat past the banks watching the small fish coming out and then followed the incredible feeding frenzies from where tiger chasing the small fish all boil to the surface; on one day...50 fish EACH!

And fish on the fly amongst all this! You have to wear gloves so your hands don't burn when you try to slow the fish down. Book your place now for 2008 as places are going fast!!
